«Comparative peace perspectives: notions of peace at different levels of government and civil society» was the title of the international winter school held in Karelia in November 2016. The school was the result of cooperation between Centre for Peace Studies (UIT) and Petrozavodsk State University. The project, which was partially funded by the Barents Plus program, gathered around 30 students from UIT – the Arctic University of Norway and higher education institutions of Petrozavodsk, Murmansk and Arkhangelsk. Aiming to discuss theoretical and practical issues of interaction between North-European countries and Russia, the school served as a perfect arena for Russian and Norwegian students to build relations through open dialogue and exchange of ideas. Practitioners from civil society and lecturers from several universities contributed to increase the understanding of interconnection of theoretical and practical knowledge about peace ideas, institutions and practices, cross-border cooperation, Nordic history and politics.
